Steeleye Span began life in late 1969, formed by ex-Fairport Convention bassist Ashley ‘Tyger’ Hutchings.
Steeleye Span recorded “The Hills of Greenmore”, an Irish fox-hunting song on their first album. ” Skewball ” is a song about a racehorse. Notable versions include those by Woody Guthrie , Peter, Paul and Mary , Lonnie Donegan , Steeleye Span and Joan Baez .
In it there is no clue as to how ‘Steeleye’ Span acquired his nickname. The song is such a fragment that it is hardly ever performed and Steeleye’s name would never have got beyond the pages of Grainger’s Lincolnshire Folk Songs if it hadn’t been for a conversation one night in St. Albans.
